I have been a practising solicitor for over twenty years. I practice mostly in the area of employment law, anti-discrimination law and also dispute resolution more widely. I have over twenty years of experience advising both corporate and private clients. During my career and have been engaged by numerous private individuals, companies, corporations, LLP’s, law firms, local authorities, trade unions and other employers and litigants.
I have experience acting in a number of capacities from a stand-alone solicitor to the head of law departments or in-house counsel in a number of organisations.
I have particular knowledge in the areas of education, trade unions and local authorities. I have significant experience also in the regulatory sphere and have appeared for various professionals before their regulatory bodies, in particular in the case of teachers at the National College of Teaching and Leadership.
On a number of occasions, I have had the conduct of a number of complex multi-party disputes. I was heavily involved in the mass equal pay litigation particularly when it was prevalent in the local authority sphere and was of extremely high value. These often involved thousands of Claimants and very complex law and whilst they were very difficult pieces of litigation my clients were content with the outcome on every occasion.
I have also acted defending and bringing multi-party claims in a number of instances connected to the Police Force and in relation to Firefighters relating to pensions issues, overtime and holiday pay and the method of remuneration of undercover officers. This is in addition to the large number of multi-party protective award claims which I have conducted over the years for members of various trade unions often on the matter of a failure to consult with a recognised trade union and leading to the award of protective awards against the employer.
I am a competent draftsperson and have drafted and amended hundreds of settlement agreements throughout my career, my contract knowledge is very competent. In some cases the individuals involved were in very senior, high profile positions and the settlement amounts were often very significant and very high profile politically for the client.
This should be allied to the fact that I have acted in every type of employment law case which exists from relatively simple Wages Act cases through to multi-party, multi-jurisdictional matters in the Employment Tribunal and the Employment Appeals Tribunal and on rare occasions The Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. I have an interest in all types of discrimination cases and have a great deal of experience in this area.
I was a criminal higher advocate before moving to my current area of practice and as such, I am a competent and unflustered advocate and as such, I am content to conduct most litigation without a requirement to instruct counsel in most cases.

I offer flexible options via telephone, video calls (zoom, teams etc) and by email. Alternately I am happy to meet at any of the Setfords’ offices or indeed the client’s home or place of work.
I do not intend to be constrained by normal office working hours and as such can amend my working regime to suit the client and I am usually happy to be contacted outside of normal working hours if the case so demands
