Matthew Wightman Chartered Legal Executive

Matthew qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive in June 2022 and joined Setfords in November 2022 to work alongside Consultant Solicitor Adam Wright, having worked with him at a previous firm for several years prior to this. He has specialised in claims for clinical negligence since the very start of his legal career.

Matthew has a wealth of experience in dealing with cases of varying complexity and value in multiple areas of medicine. For example:

  • Claims relating to a delay in diagnosis
  • Claims relating to a surgical error
  • Claims relating to cancer and oncology failures
  • Claim relating to orthopaedic injuries
  • Claims relating to delays in diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy

Matthew prides himself on taking an empathetic and compassionate approach to clients, many of whom are approaching him at some of the most challenging times in their lives. He is an advocate for listening to clients in detail to understand their story and what is important to them, to work together to bring about resolution and secure justice.

Matthew also believes in a thorough and methodical approach to clinical negligence claims to ensure that ‘no stone is left unturned’ and that clients can be confident that every aspect of their injury, whether it be physical, psychological, or financial, has been considered as part of the settlement process.

Clients praise Matthew for his professionalism and for taking the time to listen to their concerns and approaching their cases with kindness and dedication. Matthew has assisted in securing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of compensation for clients. Some notable case examples include:

  • Securing an out of court settlement for a client whose ruptured Achilles tendon injury was not diagnosed in a timely fashion. The delay in diagnosis resulted functional limitation in the ankle.
  • Securing an out of court settlement for a woman who suffered a delay in diagnosis of breast cancer due to a failure to refer by her GP, after she had presented with changes in her breast.

In his spare time, Matthew ‘enjoys’/endures following Leicester City Football Club, going for walks in nature and listening to ambient music.
