Jonathan has over 40 years’ experience in the legal profession. Prior to joining Setfords, he was a partner at a Legal 500 national firm, where he developed a strong reputation in his field.

Areas of expertise

Jonathan is a Commercial Property specialist, with particular expertise in the retail, investor, small developer and secured lending sectors. He has enjoyed a 27-year relationship with one of the UK’s leading discount supermarket groups, supporting its growth from an emerging operator to a mainstream market player. His practice includes landlord and tenant matters, conditional site acquisitions and secured lending transactions.

Approach to work and clients

Jonathan values the long-standing relationships he has built with many of his clients. His experience also enables him to take on new clients with confidence, providing clear, commercially focused advice from the outset.

He particularly enjoys identifying the key issues in any transaction, cutting through complexity to focus on the points that truly matter. Jonathan prides himself on discussing these matters with clients in a clear and straightforward way, enabling them to make informed decisions.

As a career highlight, Jonathan served for 10 years on the Management Board of his previous firm and was elected by his fellow partners to a 3-year term as Chair.

Outside his day-to-day practice, Jonathan was approached in autumn 2025 to act as a co-driver on a humanitarian relief convoy to Ukraine, organised by a charitable initiative, an experience he found both humbling and uplifting and hopes to repeat.
