Emma qualified in September 2001, initially specialising in insolvency law and later retraining as a family lawyer.
In insolvency, Emma covered all aspects of non-contentious and contentious insolvency, including administrations, liquidations and individual bankruptcies. She predominately acted for Insolvency Practitioners in large accountancy practices.
Emma finds her insolvency skills highly transferrable to family law. She is able to unravel complicated financial arrangements and, as a contentious lawyer in both areas, is equipped to deal with stressful events in people's lives. Whether they are facing debt problems or a breakdown of a relationship, Emma understands the impact this has on the family as a whole.
Experience
Emma has practical experience conducting an array of cases varying in complexity and value. These include:
- Resolving finances where couples are separating, divorcing or dissolving a civil partnership.
- Dealing with complex financial arrangements including business interests, sales/valuations of family businesses, and large family trusts.
- Resolving arrangements for the children with a focus on avoiding the court process.
- Unraveling complex financial and business structures with the ability to adopt forensic skills to trace and recover hidden assets.
Emma is recognised for her empathetic yet realistic approach. As a member of Resolution, it is important to Emma that alternatives to the court process are explored to ensure that cases are concluded amicably where possible to avoid the unnecessary stress and costs of court proceedings.
Emma is able to effectively deal with the practical aspects of finances during separation, alongside the emotional challenges separating couples face. She knows that instructing the right lawyer is important, as clients need to feel the trust and dedication in their lawyer when disclosing private and sensitive information.
In her spare time, Emma enjoys spending time with her three children, playing in a netball league, and travelling.
