Career history
Renu has a unique professional background, having worked both within the NHS and in claimant clinical negligence firms. She previously served as Head of Legal Services at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, where she was responsible for managing all medico-legal and coronial matters across a multi-site acute hospital trust. In that role, she advised clinicians and senior management on patient safety incidents, serious incident investigations, inquests, clinical negligence claims, risk management and legal policy. She worked closely with NHS Resolution, panel solicitors and hospital management and regularly prepared board-level reports relating to legal risk and patient safety issues.
This experience provides her with a detailed understanding of how hospitals investigate incidents and defend claims, which now assists her in representing patients and families bringing claims following negligent medical treatment.
Prior to this role, Renu worked at leading claimant clinical negligence firms, handling a large caseload of complex and high-value claims. She has extensive experience in brain injury, delayed diagnosis, surgical negligence, fatal claims, inquests and abuse cases within clinical and institutional settings.
Renu also has significant experience in coronial law and regularly represents families at pre-inquest reviews and inquests. In many cases, the inquest findings led to successful civil claims and changes to hospital procedures.
Notable cases
Catastrophic brain injury claim
Renu represented a client who suffered a severe brain injury after a drug overdose caused hypoglycaemia, which was not detected or treated in time by hospital staff. The client was left requiring 24-hour care for the rest of their life. Liability was established, and the case involved complex expert evidence in neurology, endocrinology and care needs.
Child brain injury case
Renu acted for a child who suffered a brain injury which left them unable to live independently or work in the future. The case involved detailed expert evidence regarding lifelong financial needs. The claim involved significant future care and support provision.
Failure to diagnose meningitis
Renu represented the family of a baby who suffered a preventable brain injury due to a failure to diagnose and treat meningitis in time. The case involved paediatric, infectious disease and neurological expert evidence and resulted in a successful claim for compensation for the child’s long-term care and support needs.
Amputation following negligent treatment
Renu acted for a patient whose dominant arm had to be amputated following negligent medical treatment and a delay in diagnosis. Liability was admitted, and the claim involved complex expert evidence regarding prosthetics, accommodation and loss of earnings.
Gastrointestinal Injury - delayed diagnosis of ulcerative colitis
Renu represented a client whose ulcerative colitis was not diagnosed in time, resulting in extensive surgery and the need for a permanent colostomy. The case involved gastroenterology and surgical expert evidence and resulted in a successful claim for compensation.
Gastrointestinal Injury – Delayed diagnosis of bowel injury leading to peritonitis and sepsis
This client underwent a partial hepatectomy (removal of lobe of the liver) during which the surgeon punctured the patient’s bowel. This was not identified in a timely manner which led to peritonitis and sepsis. Renu successfully represented this client which involved a significant amount of expert evidence and was a highly complex matter. This resulted in successful damages for the claimant.
Inquest representation leading to neglect finding
Renu represented a family at an inquest where the Coroner returned a conclusion of neglect following failures in medical treatment. The case attracted national media attention and led to further investigations into the hospital’s procedures and a subsequent civil claim.
Abuse cases within clinical environments
Renu has acted for a number of clients who were abused within clinical and institutional environments, including cases involving historic abuse and institutional failures to protect vulnerable patients. These cases often involved complex issues of limitation, psychiatric injury and institutional liability.
Media and Public Interest Work
Renu has been involved in a number of high-profile cases and national campaigns relating to patient safety, abuse and institutional failings. Her work has been featured on BBC, ITV, Sky News, Channel 4 and Channel 5, and in national newspapers.
