A 2016 addition to the team at Setfords, James joined as Head of Litigation from a leading London and South East based practice.
James has a robust, commercial and results orientated approach to cases which is ideally aligned to Setfords' core values of clear communication, timely delivery and value for money.
James primarily acts for regional SME's and high net worth private individuals although often acts for national PLCs as part of a larger project team.
James has a strong preference for visiting his regular commercial clients at their primary place of business to enable a better understanding of their business / operational model.
Contentious - James is principally instructed in commercial contract disputes, professional negligence (legal/accountancy), disputed debt recovery and respondent employment cases in the County Court, High Court and Employment Tribunal.
Non-contentious. Commercial contract & Business advisory - terms of business / terms and conditions for the provision of goods and/or services, supplier & distribution agreements and contractual commercial advisory.
James often advises on an ad-hoc basis for his commercial clients on a variety of issues, often initially as a sounding board for the routine issues which arise in the course of business where timely contextual legal advice is hugely beneficial for the client.
James' private client practice is a generalist civil litigation practice which has a significant overlap with his core commercial practice areas.
Typical client instructions include executive termination packages (Settlement Agreements), debt / loan recovery, residential property ownership/ interest disputes and consumer contract cases.
James acts on catastrophic personal injury claims and continues to do so in collaboration with our Head of Personal Injury Nigel Cragg, to provide a personal service which enables clients to get the very best outcome in what are often life changing circumstances.
Specialist Area - Equine Law
In addition to his generalist Civil Litigation practice James has a particular interest in Equine Law which encompasses equine sales advisory work, contractual disputes (including syndicate, loan/ lease agreements), veterinary negligence, property disputes, property damage, public liability & personal injury cases.
James' interest in equine law extends to commercial clients whose business is connected with the equine world either directly or in a peripheral manner.
James is always pleased to hear from new clients with prospective cases and offers a free initial case review/discussion.
