I have been a company commercial lawyer for over 30 years and have advised a variety of businesses during that time both as an in-house lawyer (Racal Electronics, Toshiba and Nortel) and in private practice.
I have spent time in Brussels as a trainee with the European Commission and negotiated IT/supply contracts in Sweden, Denmark, France and Algeria.
For the last 20 years, I have advised on transactions (buying/selling businesses, including mergers and re-organisations) and commercial contracts. Those commercial contracts have included standard trading terms, agency/distributor agreements, IP/IT contracts and partnership/shareholder/LLP member agreements.
Basically, if a commercial contract is not employment, property or finance-specific I should be able to advise on it. That covers setting up, running and selling a business.
I enjoy working with both start-ups and established businesses and being able to provide understandable commercial/pragmatic advice. My preference is always to work alongside a client so that we can jointly find solutions within an agreed budget.
Commercial clients know their business much better than I ever will and I have the experience of having advised hundreds of businesses. Therefore, working together we’ll find the right solution.
I’m a Dad and Grandad so I try and spend some time with my kids/grandkids. What spare time I then have I try to use to keep fit and bird watching. Swimming is my preferred activity (we are blessed locally with a 50m outdoor pool) and a bit of cycling (static bike) and walking.
I’ve been lucky enough to participate in some wonderful sporting events (eg London Marathon, Great North Run and C2C bike ride – Whitehaven to Tynemouth). My ambitions now are a lot more modest!
