Mariam Basher Harris Consultant Solicitor

Mariam has a range of experience, both working in an international law firm and as in-house Legal Counsel. She has worked on international matters, including over a year spent in Qatar between her secondment at a Qatari governmental entity during her training contract, and separately, working for its semi-governmental subsidiary.

She trained at a top UK law firm, qualifying in 2020 in commercial disputes. She then worked as Legal Counsel at BSI (London, UK) and Legal Counsel at QC+ (Doha, Qatar) before joining Setfords.

During her training contract, Mariam completed four seats, giving her a broad understanding of the law, which she applies to her practice today.

Mariam's approach is to provide simple and clear advice to further the aims of the individual or organisation she's working with. 

She enjoys putting all the pieces together and creating a unique solution that considers the law, the factual circumstances, and the client's needs. She values understanding the client's business and their industry, and devising commercial solutions.

Notable cases and career highlights:

Mariam has worked on some notable litigation procedures and bundles, including:

• A rail dispute involving a potential breach of contract and administrative claims against the Secretary of State for Transport regarding termination sums of a franchise agreement.
• A rail dispute involving an arbitration claim worth approximately £16 million under a franchise agreement.
• Supported in a dispute worth £5-10 million against property managers.

Outside of work:

Mariam has been involved in a range of charities and initiatives, including:

• Acted as an interim trustee and Chair for a community charity in London.
• Worked in a committee for a community charity in London to review the organisation, its business strategy, and make recommendations to support its objectives and its members.
• Organised a mental health and wellbeing conference in London in 2018.
• Studied Business Strategy and Korean at Korea University for a summer semester in 2016.
