Setfords, the UK’s largest platform law firm, has appointed Tom Anelay as Director of Corporate Affairs to lead external communications as the firm enters its next phase of growth.
The appointment forms part of Setfords’ investment in how it communicates with lawyers, clients and the wider market. Having pioneered the consultant model in the UK, the firm has spent the past decade building proprietary technology, data and digital capabilities alongside its legal platform – and is now building a wider understanding of what that combination delivers.
Tom joins from communications consultancy Citypress, where he launched and led the public affairs practice. He previously held senior roles at Trafalgar Strategy and Grayling, advising clients in highly regulated sectors on reputation management and corporate positioning. He also brings significant litigation and disputes experience, including supporting core participants in two statutory inquiries.
He began his career in Parliament working for then Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing MP and is a former PRWeek 30 Under 30 winner.
In the new role, Tom will lead Setfords’ communications strategy across media relations, stakeholder engagement, public policy and internal communications. He will report to Chief Growth Officer George Reynolds and work closely with Co-CEOs Guy and Chris Setford.
Setfords now has more than 650 consultant lawyers operating on its platform and reported revenue of £67m in its most recent financial year. The firm’s centralised lead-generation engine delivers more than £20m in annual work to consultants, supported by integrated compliance, finance, PI cover and business development support.
George Reynolds, Chief Growth Officer, said: “We built the UK’s largest fee-share law firm by giving lawyers a better way to practise. We’ve also spent ten years building the technology and data infrastructure that powers it. Tom knows how to position businesses at the leading edge of regulated industries and that’s exactly where Setfords is.”
Guy and Chris Setford, Co-CEOs, said: “We’ve pioneered the consultant model – it’s now an established part of the profession and we’re determined to keep setting the standard. The investment we’re making in our platform, our infrastructure and our technology is already well underway and it will change what people think a law firm can be.”
Tom Anelay said: “Setfords has combined quality, flexibility and scale in a way no other firm has. There’s a bigger story here about the technology and the people behind the platform, and I’m excited to make sure the market hears it.”
