Tell us a bit about you and your role at Setfords…

I’ve joined Setfords as Credit Controller in order to help the firm and its consultants to reclaim monies owed from clients. My previous role was at Simons Muirhead and Burton Solicitors, where I was for over seven years. Having felt that I’d gone as far as I could in that role, it was the ideal time to shake things up and try something, and somewhere new. I commute each day from Bromley, but despite the distance I was keen to get a taste of Setfords, having been attracted to the way the firm differentiates itself.

When my dearly beloved Arsenal Football Club change their ways and decide to compete again, in my spare time I can be seen at the Emirates Stadium or surrounding areas (read, ‘pubs’) and horse racing events, though unfortunately not Cheltenham this year! I love to take weekend breaks away within the UK, however am looking to go further a field.

What’s your approach to credit control?

First and foremost, I see my role as supporting consultants to recover the rewards for their work and ease the burden of this task for them. In this business, relationships are key to success so I approach credit control with a client-first mentality which means always being open, polite, professional and understanding when in communication with clients. Clients experience many different circumstances that may affect their ability to pay and it’s my job to make sure we take this in to account, that I listen and work with them to reach a solution.

How does this work in practice?

I am working closely with the finance team, namely Andrew Joseph, Finance Director to identify files where bills are outstanding, and working closely with consultants to understand the context to those cases. Together with consultants we decide the best course of action to recover what is owed. That may include me making contact with the client to discuss the options available, which is always done with the consultant’s knowledge and with the client-first ethos in mind. Over the past two weeks this has been working well and clients have been receptive to communication.
