Cyber law QC Dean Armstrong joins Setfords to offer organisations expert guidance on cyber-risk and data protection

Renowned barrister and cyber law expert Dean Armstrong QC has joined Setfords London as a consultant.

Co-author of the first comprehensive textbook on cyber-risk and data protection, Dean Armstrong QC has advised international banks, large financial institutions, blue chip companies and major players in the not for profit sector. He is expert in areas including GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the impact of Brexit on data regulation, and how international firms should manage data across the world.

A City background, combined with over twenty years as an accomplished defence advocate he has represented clients in high-profile cases including R v Darwin (the wife of canoeist who faked his own death), R v Asil Nadir, R v Tabak (the murder of Joanna Yeates in Bristol), the case relating to the criminal investigation surrounding the News of The World newspaper, and those involved in the Cash for Honours and Leveson enquiries.

Unpicking the complexities of cyber law

In recent years Dean has been unpicking the complexities of cyber law and advising businesses on the commercial effects of increased regulation. At the forefront of this emerging legal specialism Dean has joined Setfords London offering clients advice on a range of cyber-issues.

“Cyber security and data protection is the commercial issue of our time. Despite this, many business leaders are still blind to the repercussions if they fall foul of regulation; from increasingly draconian fines, reputational fallout and increasing levels of personal liability,” said Dean Armstrong QC.

He continued, “Setfords offer the flexibility and support I need to reach the businesses that will most benefit from expert legal insight as part of business-critical preparation.”

Embracing entrepreneurialism in emerging sectors

Guy Setford, Co-CEO of Setfords said, “Dean’s blend of commercial and financial expertise, along with outstanding advocacy skills sees him offer enterprises unrivalled commercial insight in cyber law. I am delighted he has joined Setfords to offer much-needed cyber services in this time of Brexit uncertainty, the implementation of GDPR and increased legislation in the area.”

“We are excited to embrace emerging areas of law, especially when they are as significant to business success as cyber law,” said Chris Setford, Co-CEO of Setfords. “If a lawyer sees a gap in the market we explore how we can support them to address the needs of clients. Our flexibility, client-acquisition strategies, technology and marketing abilities are here to embrace entrepreneurialism and help solicitors succeed.
