A lawyer and advocate whose exceptional legal work led to him becoming the first solicitor in English legal history to be presented with a “red bag” from Queen’s Counsel has joined Setfords Solicitors.
John Davis, a civil, commercial and criminal litigator, made history in 1997 after the Lord Chancellor agreed he should be presented with the coveted bag in recognition for his work as a Higher Court advocate during a major fraud trial.
Up until then red bags had only ever been handed out to junior counsel as a reward for high performance. The bags are designed to carry a junior’s robes and brief and are seen as a status symbol within the profession.
John has continued to excel in the legal profession. His work featured in Michael Mansfield QC’s first book, Presumed Guilty, and John has run his own law firm for over 30 years. His clients spread across the globe and include a member of a Middle Eastern royal family.
John’s work includes commercial and domestic property work and global agreements for finance and commercial contracts.
John said: “I am delighted to have joined Setfords as a consultant. My clients are high-net worth individuals with exacting standards and for this reason Setfords’ terrific network of lawyers and strong London presence was a great draw.”
Co-CEO Chris Setford said: “John Davis is a highly regarded litigator with an exceptional record and we are thrilled he has decided to join Setfords as a consultant.”
Co-CEO Guy Setford added: “John’s commercial, civil and criminal litigation experience will be greatly valued here at Setfords and we look forward to helping him serve his clients.”
