Queen’s Speech – changes for the social care system

This years speech, by the Queen, has laid out a number of proposed bills and changes across the spectrum, from pensions, to immigration and national insurance. Also included are changes to the care system and around the paying for care, which may make the financial side of estate planning that little bit easier as well as give consumers a better peace of mind when choosing their care. This bill will give everyone a legal right to access their own personal care budget which they can spend how they wish on their care. In addition, the bill looks to clean up the care system following a large amount of criticism seen in the press over the last couple years around the care that elderly people have received at a number of care home organisations. The bill will put into force a rating system for care homes and hospitals similar to the Ofsted ratings seen in education. There will also be the creation of two new organisations called the Health Education England and the Health Research Authority and the powers for the chief executive of hospitals will increase making it easier to enforce changes and make hospitals accountable.
