A report carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory, for the RAC, has suggested that 10% of drivers over the age of 70 are not fit to be on the road. The investigation began following a rise in the number of road traffic accidents involving this group of drivers.Currently there are almost 4 million drivers over the age of 70. All of these people must legally declare at 70 whether or not they are fit to continue driving and must do so following this every three years. However, despite this, there is no real formal medical assessment or driving test in the UK. Other countries around the world, including Australia, do look to measure capability of driving much more formally within the older generation. The report goes on to say that around 1/3 of drivers who do decide to stop driving when they get older are probably safe to drive and give up too soon. And this is another matter that needs to be considered. The report suggested that a self-assessment checklist or tools around how to measure ability could really help drivers to make the right decision and “adequately assess their skills behind the wheel.” The aim of the RAC and the Government is to keep people driving as long as is possible. The contents of this article are intended for general information purposes only and shall not be deemed to be, or constitute legal advice.
