A recent report by e.surv suggests that the number of residential property repossessions is one third higher in the North than in the South, with the North seeing 1.8 repossessions per 1,000 homes compared to 1.4 in the South. Chester is the highest on the list with 4.9 for every 1,000.
This widening gap is blamed partly on the labour and employment market, particularly as salaries have dropped the most in the north-west, where there is highest number of repossessions. Here salaries have fallen in real terms by 10.2pc. With these drop in salaries it has been difficult for home owners to continue to keep up with their mortgage repayments making repossession by the banks a real likelihood for many.
The report however also does paint a slightly more positive aspect, stating that overall repossessions have fallen in 2012, with suggestions that the banks are trying harder to keep people in their homes.
