Virgin Atlantic to start domestic services

Virgin Atlantic have announced that they will start a new service for individuals, flying domestic flights between Heathrow and Edinburgh and Aberdeen, in March they will also start three daily flights to Manchester.

These new services will continue Virgin’ fight to be the airline of choice over British Airways and challenge their monopoly, and this domestic service will challenge BA further in the local market. Virgin has argued that recently with BA take over to BMI there is very little domestic competition.

Virgin are to take control of the Aer Lingus plans, rebranded into the Virgin colours, and Aer Lingus will also supply the crews. However, the move is expected to create 150 jobs within the UK.

A number of reports recently have voiced the uncertain future of the Virgin Atlantic brand, with rumours of Delta Air Lines looking to buy out Singapore Airlines of its 49% stake and The Sunday Times recently stating that Richard Branson could be set to give up control.
