Water Bills Set to Rise by 5.7% in April

There was bad news for residential property owners today, with reports that average water and sewerage bills in England and Wales are set to rise by around 5.7% this April.

The increase will see the water utility bill rise to an average of £376 per household, although there is a wide variation on the actual rise depending on where you live; with the lowest increase, 3.8%, for Dwr Cymru customers and the highest, 8.2%, for Southern customers.

Ofwat, the industry regulator, explained that the rises were expected and added that the variations in the regional rises was due to differing levels of ongoing capital investments between the companies; large new housing estates and new coastal protection schemes were the reason behind Southern’s large increase.

Ofwat did state that the levels of funding increase would come under scrutiny if companies did not deliver on planned investment promises.
