Firms that send out unsolicited text messages could soon be facing fines of up to £500,000; as the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) looks set to crack down on text messages related to credit or compensation, the worst offenders.
The ICO stated that they consider this a high priority due to the high levels of complaints they receive about the messages. In addition to the complaints, an investigation into the text based offers - of debt write offs and compensation entitlement - found that many of the products being advertised would, in fact, make people financially worse off.
There are also concerns about breaches of business law, in regards to the text messages; although may of the texts come from legitimate companies, often arriving after terms and conditions allowing the company to get in touch are agreed to, there is a growing trend of messages being sent without consent.
