Fracking Protest in Enniskillen

Over 100 people gathered in Enniskillen earlier this week, to demonstrate against the planned use of fracking on the shale rocks around County Fermanagh; to extract the natural gas trapped between the layers.

The fracking technique has triggered environmental concerns after possible links to small earthquakes and water pollution were discovered. The process of fracking, also know as hydraulic fracturing, involves drilling horizontally into the shale rock that contains the gas and then injecting water and sand under high pressure to crack the shale and release the gas.

The company carrying out the work in County Fermanagh, Tamboran Resources, stated that they would work hard to minimise the risk with a comprehensive seismic survey; to give a detailed 3d image of exactly what they were drilling into. The company also stated that they would avoid the use of chemicals in the process, to make sure that water pollution was not a risk.
