EU and US Approve Google Motorola Bid

The controversial £7.9bn Google bid for the phone manufacturer Motorola Mobility has finally received approval in both the US and EU.

Both the European Commission and US regulators agreed that there were no competition or business law issues with the deal, as it stood, but they both vowed that the two companies would be monitored over the use of patents.

Google’s decision to bid on the company came after the split in the original Motorola, with the section that makes phones and tablet computers forming Motorola Mobility, a split that left more than 17,000 of Motorola Mobility's patents up for grabs.

The approval in the EU and US is a significant step forward for the bid, but celebrations will be on hold until approval from China, Taiwan and Israel is gained.
