Cornwall’s council confirmed today that the number of people on the housing register, awaiting social housing, sas reached 23,000; a record high for the county.
The rise in applicants is all the more apparent when the numbers are compared to Januarys Homechoice register, performed by the council, which reported a figure of 21,000 on the register. The reasons behind such a long list seem to be a combination of the poor economy, landlord & tenant issues - an overall lack of landlords and an overall lack of new affordable housing in the county.
Plans are being worked on to tackle the issue though, with the Conservative-Independent-run authority looking to start up a £60m housing package to relieve some of the pressure, although this plan would require a £20m government loan. Senior council members will meet next week, to discuss the proposals.
